Synopsis

Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.

The Fault in Our Stars is directed by Josh Boone and the screenplay is by Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber. The film stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster, Ansel Elgort as Augustus Waters, Willem Dafoe as Peter van Houten, Nat Wolff as Isaac, and Laura Dern as Hazel’s mom. 

Fox 2000, Temple Hill, and TSG Entertainment co-produced the movie. The same team would go on to adapt John’s book Paper Towns the following year starring Nat Wolff in the lead role. 

John made a cameo in The Fault in Our Stars as Girl’s Father…but his scene was cut! You can find his Hollywood moment in the deleted scenes. John was allowed to keep all of his clothes from the role. The movie was set in Indianapolis but mostly filmed in Pittsburgh. Visual effects supervisor Jake Braver added in John’s beloved Indianapolis airport. Many of the Amsterdam scenes were actually shot on location in Amsterdam and some scenes along the canals were interrupted by paparazzi taking pictures from the sterns of canal boat tours. 

The Fault in Our Stars grossed over $300 million worldwide.
